Should Cody spend time in the G LEAGUE

Should Cody Williams get sent down to the Stars for a stint?

I disagree with this. I think his handle is fine. He's got good balance and body control, drives with a low enough center of gravity. If he turns the ball over, it's because he's aimlessly wandering into traffic. He's also got good touch on his floater and rim finishes and seems to be making his FTs pretty well. He doesn't have confidence to really drive hard to the rim, and I think that comes from lacking strength and not dealing with NBA length and physicality. He doesn't have much burst, but lots of guys don't have much burst.
"Handle" doesnt really exist in a vacuum though. If you cant get to where you need to with the ball, for whatever limiting factor, your handle isnt good.

Like Clarkson, for how loose his handle is, I would say he's an overall good handle because he gets to his spots.

Anyone bothered to watch him in the G-League (sorry if it's been discussed in the thread, it's long)? Looks like he's shooting atrociously but at least he's taking them?

I usually give youngsters plenty of rope when it comes to passing judgement and he just barely turned 20 but I don't think I have ever been less optimistic about a rookie as I am with him. What hurts even more though is seeing all the guys drafted after him that are showing some flashes of being solid players. I loved Buzelis and he is starting to show his potential but if not him there are so many other guys that look solid.

My glass half full take for Cody is that he looked good in SL/Pre-Season so it's really just a matter of adjusting and getitng his body right.

I think if he gets stronger he's at least a good defender. Then if he can improve his shot he's a 3 and D guy. I'm not a shooting expert, but I think he has touch he just needs to fix the foot work and mechanics. I would think that is just about reps.

Do you play rec league ball at all? Think of the guy who is just kind of there to get cardio and stay out of too many actions so they don't get injured. Now imagine if he is forced to take 15+ shots and so he does it somewhat reluctantly and half heartedly.

That's what Cody looks like in the G-League right now. My advice is not to watch or you will be depressed like all of us in this thread.

Cody did look horrible in SLC and then played better in Vegas. It can turn around quick...or maybe it's the case that those games simply don't matter.

I guess what I'm worried about is that I don't see the attributes. As bad as Exum was, I think anyone would still tell you that he had good physical tools and legit size/speed for the position. With Cody, I'm having a harder time imagining how he fits into the NBA. He's not really and all around versatile player who does a lot of stuff, he doesn't have standout/valuable skills like Hendricks, he has poor physical tools, and he has a low motor.

He's long and seems to have good defensive mobility.

He could be a useful 3 and D guy (if he can ever build sufficient strength which is only somewhat in his control) eventually. But right now it's looking like the Tony Snell comp might be wishful thinking.

His brother is good at basketball... shrug.

Cody made a layup in the SL through contact with a guy meeting him at the rim..... drawing an and-1. Making that feat more impressive is that the defender who met him at the rim was the most muscular man in the NBA, Ochai.

I choose not to abandon all hope. However since most here are obviously already going through the stages of grief, I will quiet down and promise this is the last hopeful post I make.

To be fair to Cody, I do think his perimeter on ball defense has been OK....but I still think he's not great as an overall defender. He has shown potential there, but not exactly my favorite type of defender.

As far as the 3 part of it....yeah I guess so. Problem is that his indicators were very poor coming into the league. Sometimes bad shooters develop into good ones, but there wasn't a super compelling to think he was going to be a good shooter. His percentage was high, but extremely low volume and not great FT% which are more telling.

If he develops the 3 and D aspects of his game, it's what will keep him the league. But that's kind of what the bar is right now, being an NBA player at all.
