I think part of the reason why Cody looked so bad is that all of his offense was self created. When he’s at the basket he’s actually quite good but he can’t get there on his own. The GLeague is truly awful basketball and maybe if the Stars can get more organized he’ll see more success from system buckets, transition, etc. He was awful in SLC summer league, but played better in Vegas by getting a lot more easy buckets. I think there’s this expectation that once you get sent down to the GLeague, you’re just there for pure buckets. Works for some better than others. Real basketball is better for Cody than the fake GLeague basketball.
Silver lining is that probably can be a good play finisher. The bad news is that he might just be a play finisher who can’t shoot. Would have to be an elite defender type to get by in the NBA without shooting or self creation. His current day is very, very alarming if you had hopes of him being a high potential player….but he has fine role player potential I guess.
I still think current day Exum is a good goal for him. A little bit of shooting, slashing, and playmaking on offense and most of his value comes from versatility on defense. If you stripped young of his athleticism/speed (which the injuries did unfortunately) you have a very similar to prospect to Cody. Exum did bulk up a lot and played a lot harder though….so Cody has a lot of work to do to get to where Exum is.
